St. Andrew and St. Joseph Bays Estuary Program Recommended for Grant to Combat Marine Debris
Panama City, FL — The St. Andrew and St. Joseph Bays Estuary Program (SASJBEP) is proud to announce its recommendation for a significant grant award through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Marine Debris Program with funding provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Just over $677,000 will support the “Safeguarding Bays: A Joint Effort to Reduce Debris with Municipalities” project, aimed at reducing marine debris in the region’s vital estuarine ecosystems.
The project addresses the ongoing issue of man-made debris entering the bay through stormwater systems, a problem exacerbated by Hurricane Michael in 2018. The hurricane’s devastating impact on local tree cover has led to increased flooding and debris accumulation in stormwater systems. In response, the SASJBEP has been working closely with local public works departments to identify and implement effective solutions and this funding will support the implementation of one of those innovative solutions.
A key component of the project is the installation of up to 60 Enviropod LittaTraps, a proven technology that intercepts debris before it enters water bodies. These LittaTraps will be strategically placed in stormwater catch basins experiencing high debris loads, helping to protect critical habitats such as seagrass beds and wetlands from pollution.
The project also includes outreach efforts aimed at reducing debris pollution. The SASJBEP, in collaboration with volunteers and local municipalities, will develop outreach
materials in both English and Spanish, collaborate with local artists to implement stormwater drain marking, and organize community cleanups to engage residents and visitors in protecting the bays. This effort will not only improve stormwater management but also enhance the health of the region’s estuarine ecosystems, supporting both the environment and the local economy.
About the St. Andrew and St. Joseph Bays Estuary Program:
Our Vision:
Healthy, resilient bays and estuarine habitats that support native species, natural systems, recreation, fisheries and the economy, together with vibrant, resilient, and sustainable communities in the watershed that live in harmony with the needs of the estuary.
Our Mission:
To collaborate—as representatives of private, public, and non-governmental stakeholders—to improve our common sense, science-based understanding of the needs of the estuary, and to develop, promote and implement projects that protect and restore the health of the bays.
