Mayor Ralph Hammond

Mayor Ralph Hammond, an original member of the SASJBEP Policy Board, has been committed to protecting the health of St. Andrew Bay and its tributaries for many years. His interest in water quality began long before the Estuary Program through his involvement with other programs in the past. He understands that while Springfield has limited waterfront, the community plays an important role in ensuring that stormwater entering the bays is properly managed.

On the Policy Board, Mayor Hammond has been a strong supporter of keeping the Estuary Program focused on its mission of improving and protecting our natural resources to ultimately see improved water quality. Drawing on his experience in the Air Force and local government, he brings practical knowledge of stormwater management and a focus on reducing illicit discharges through public education. As the Mayor of Springfield, he is particularly interested in improving water quality and addressing stormwater in Martin Lake and throughout the Springfield area.

Looking ahead, Mayor Hammond hopes to see continued progress in addressing stormwater impacts and pollution sources before they reach local waterways. He recognizes the bays as the cornerstone of the region’s economy, recreation and way of life. as he believes the bays are the economic engine to the surrounding area. He also stresses that greater public understanding and stewardship are key to preserving these resources for future generations.

His connection to the watershed is both professional and personal. During his time at Tyndall Air Force Base, he enjoyed water skiing and other recreational activities on the bay and gained an appreciation for the importance of clean water. When he’s not serving his community, Mayor Hammond enjoys spending time outdoors, particularly hunting and enjoying Northwest Florida’s natural resources.
